Mayor Tornek also served as Pasadena’s Planning Director for three years and helped to rewrite the zoning ordinance, the General Plan, and establish the redevelopment plan for Old Pasadena. The group says during Tornek’s first term his key priorities included protecting Pasadena’s neighborhoods from overdevelopment, supporting public schools, public safety, and homelessness. He also advocated for the passing of Measure I and J campaigns to bring additional funds to city services and to public schools. During his tenure, the 710 Freeway extension plan was finally terminated, a major victory for Pasadena, that was decades in the making.“I am very grateful for the ANCA endorsement. The Pasadena Armenian community makes a vital contribution to our City in so many ways and my relationship with ANCA is critical in reinforcing the connection.” Tornek said.The Armenian National Committee of America – Pasadena Chapter is the oldest, largest, and most influential Armenian-American grassroots organization of its kind within the City of Pasadena. Founded in 1979, the Pasadena ANCA advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s thriving Armenian-American community and promotes increased civic service and participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.Patatian received the group’s support based on his platform to provide secure streets, accessible government, financial stability, education equity and revitalized neighborhoods. Bo’s impressive involvement in local and state governance spans over two decades and he has worked for several members of California Legislature. Bo currently serves as a City Commissioner as the Mayor’s appointee to the Pasadena City Library Commission and is also a member of Pasadena’s 2020 Census Complete Count Committee.“I am beyond honored and humbled by the faith placed in me by the Board of Directors of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) of Pasadena Chapter and I am appreciative of their vote of confidence and official endorsement,” Patatian said. “Having long served alongside the leadership of this venerable organization, I know firsthand how dedicated they are and the amount of time and energy they commit to pursuing the well being of the collective interests of our local Pasadena Armenian-American Community and its residents at large.”In the District 6 race, the group opted to endorse Steve Madison.“Councilmember Madison has an understanding of the issues that concern the Armenian American community in his district and the City of Pasadena overall, as well as the awareness and insight on how to improve on those issues,” Yepremian said.Madison was first elected in 1999 to represent District 6, and was reelected four times since then. Madison has served on the Council’s Economic Development & Technology Committee (EDTECH), Public Safety Committee and Legislative Policy Committee, the Pasadena Center Operating Company Board, the Multimodal Operations and Development Entity Board, the Youth Development and Violence Prevention Task Force. He also served on the council’s special committee overseeing the recovery of over $5 million in embezzled funds. He is also one of Pasadena’s three appointees to and former President of the Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena Airport Authority Commission, which oversees the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank.Madison has been a strong advocate on Armenian American issues in Pasadena and in 2013 voted to approve the Armenian Genocide Memorial at Pasadena’s Memorial Park.“I am deeply honored to receive an endorsement for my re-election from the Pasadena chapter of ANCA,” Madison said. “Pasadena is proud to have a vibrant, active and important ArmenianAmerican community and with our sister city in Armenia, Vanadzor, as well, issues of importance to the Armenian-American community are very important to me and the City of Pasadena. I intend to work very hard in my campaign to deserve the support of my friends at ANCA’s Pasadena Chapter.”In the March 3 election candidates will need more than 50 percent of the vote win the election. If no one reaches that benchmark the top two candidates will face off nine months later in a runoff election on Nov. 3.“We cannot stress enough the importance of this election and how critical it is that each registered voter within the City of Pasadena do their civic duty and vote,” said Shoghig Yepremian, ANCA Pasadena chapter chair. “We particularly encourage though, that all of our fellow Armenian-American voters, not only vote themselves, but also encourage all of their friends, family and associates to do so as well and furthermore to do all they can to show their support for our endorsed candidates by donating to their campaigns and volunteering their time and energies to ensure that they are successfully elected on March 3rd, 2020.”The Armenian National Committee of America – Pasadena Chapter is the oldest, largest and most influential Armenian-American grassroots organization of its kind within the City of Pasadena. Founded in 1979, the Pasadena ANCA advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s thriving Armenian-American community and promotes increased civic service and participation at the grassroots and public policy levels. In October,  ANCA endorsed District 4 City Council candidate Joe Baghdadlian. How to manage your overflowing mortgage pipeline

first_img continue reading » Every mortgage boom that has hit seems to have come out of nowhere. Loan officers and the origination team quickly become overwhelmed with overflowing pipelines, so keeping them highly engaged and encouraged only lasts so long as weeks turn into months of long hours. When your mortgage team is overwhelmed, the best relief you can provide is to staff up. This can become a bigger challenge when every lender is busy and competition is fierce to hire the best, qualified loan officers and processors. If past experience holds true, you will likely end up with candidates that aren’t quite what you want, but are still adequate enough to move forward. Here are a few suggested best practices to help your credit union manage the stresses of being incredibly busy, while still capturing new business and serving your members.Best Practice: Hire Supporting Staff to Take the Load OffHiring such supporting staff as junior loan officers and processing assistants, to ease the load for your existing team can make a world of difference. These staff members would be skilled admins that can do simple tasks, such as calling members for documents or following up on requests. Forget trying to train them on the whole job, instead train them to do key time-sucking components. The training time will be reduced and they can add value quickly. This will also allow your more knowledgeable staff to handle more challenging tasks and manage their workload effectively. Cabinet approves draft fracking rules

first_img10 October 2013The Cabinet has approved the gazetting of draft technical regulations on petroleum exploration and exploitation by means of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The proposed regulations will be published in the Government Gazette for public comment for 30 days before being resubmitted to the Cabinet for final approval.Announcing the Cabinet’s decision in Pretoria on Thursday, Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu said the potential of shale gas exploration and exploitation provided an opportunity for South Africa to begin exploring the production of its own fuel, and could provide huge impetus for the industrialisation of the economy. She added that the draft regulations prescribed international industry practices and standards to enhance safe exploration and production of shale gas, and would ensure that fracking was conducted “in a socially and environmentally balanced manner”.Hydraulic fracturing involves the extraction of gas trapped underground by using pressurised liquid to fracture rock. Opponents of the process argue that the economic benefits of accessing previously unavailable energy sources are outweighed by the potential environmental impacts, including contamination of ground water. According to petroleum industry estimates, 2.5-million hydraulic fracturing jobs had been performed on oil and gas wells worldwide by 2012, more than one-million of them in the United States. South Africa, according to recent estimates by the US Department of Energy, has the eighth-largest shale gas reserves in the world at 390-trillion cubic feet. Shabangu told reporters on Thursday that the government was satisfied that the regulations had sufficiently addressed the recommendations contained in a report on an investigation into the social and environmental impacts of hydraulic fracturing that was conducted by a technical task team in 2012.The report had recommended measures to mitigate the environmental impact of fracking, the main recommendation being to ensure that the coutry’s regulatory framework was robust enough to ensure that any negative impacts would be mitigated. An interdepartmental committee had been set up to strengthen the regulations, and a comprehensive international benchmarking exercise of well-developed jurisdictions that had begun shale gas exploitation had been undertaken.“We believe, as government, that we have acted in the best possible way, in the interests of the South African economy and its citizens, and we will continue to do so as we traverse this journey of hydraulic fracturing for the production of shale gas.”Among other things, the draft regulations provide mechanisms for the assessment of the potential environmental impact of any proposed activities, for the protection of fresh water resources, and for the co-existence of shale gas exploitation and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project.“We have a responsibility as government to ensure security of energy supply for the country, and to explore energy sources that will improve the country’s energy mix, grow the economy and contribute to job creation,” Shabangu said.SAnews.gov.za and SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Guide on newly approved herbicides

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) has published a set of guidelines for soybean farmers who are considering the use of newly approved dicamba-based herbicide products.Last year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registered Monsanto’s XtendiMax and BASF’s Engenia herbicides for pre-emergence and post-emergence use on dicamba-tolerant (DT) soybeans. The dicamba outreach publication was developed by pesticide program administrator Dave Scott of OISC and Purdue Extension weed specialist Bill Johnson to explain how to legally and effectively use dicamba-based herbicides on DT crops.Dicamba-based herbicides are best used to treat giant ragweed, marestail, waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, lambsquarters and morning glories.“This product is a sorely needed tool in controlling glyphosate, ALS, and PPO resistant broadleaf weeds in soybeans,” Johnson said. “It’s very effective if used correctly.”Using dicamba-based herbicides requires more caution than other more commonly used herbicides, Johnson said.“This is a new tool for controlling weeds in soybeans, but it has more restrictions than any other herbicide I have encountered in my life,” he said.Scott expects the labels and legal prohibitions on dicamba-based herbicides to be in development for some time, which is why the publication was created.Dicamba is a highly active herbicide at very low levels, meaning it can damage many desirable crop and landscape plants at very low doses if it moves off the intended area.“Because this tool will be widely used and misused, and the fact it can injure non-target vegetation at such low doses, the potential for lawsuits and cancellation of registration is also very high,” Johnson said.“Past experience with dicamba herbicide use has demonstrated that potential damage to non-target crops and vegetation is considerable and must be avoided if these products and herbicide-resistant technology is to survive,” Scott added. The publication is available online at https://www.oisc.purdue.edu/pesticide/pdf/dicamba_outreach_011117.pdf.last_img read more

Morpheus: Y Combinator-Like Incubator in India (RWS Interview)

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Morpheus describes itself as “a gang of serial entrepreneurs and around 40 startup founders” who are “trying to make a small contribution towards India’s startup revolution.” The venture aims to fill the gap in early-stage financing with a decidedly hands-on approach. Is it a fund, an angel network, or an incubator? Are these labels even still relevant? What segments does it focus on? What is early-stage innovation in India like? We spoke recently with Indus Kaitan, a Valley entrepreneur who returned to India as a Morpheus partner. Read on and listen to find out more about the early-stage scene in India.Listen to the InterviewDownload the MP3.Two Things to Know About MorpheusHow much equity do you take in each company?“We take an equity stake of 4 to 8% in each of the companies we engage with as part of the business acceleration program.”Do you invest money in companies?“No. Currently, we do not make any capital investment. We work alongside you as a co-founder, and we invest sweat capital and intellectual capital in the portfolio.”In other words, Morpheus is an incubator (the team calls it an “accelerator”), not a fund. If you need cash, find it elsewhere. Morpheus is okay with the label “Like Y Combinator, but without the cash.” That makes sense, because cash is not what makes Y Combinator interesting. Also, as Indus explains, very few people in India are willing to work purely for equity, without cash. Morpheus is willing to do that. It invests time and experience for equity. Our Questions and MP3 GuideQuestion: How is early-stage financing doing during this downturn compared to the last one in 2001/2002?Skip to 2:24 in MP3Summary: Investment during the last six months is down 58% from a year ago. VCs have moved to later-stage, leaving a real gap in early-stage financing.Question: How is the VC model changing, if at all, and how does the global financial crisis impact this change?Skip to 5:30 in MP3Summary: VCs in India are investing in profitable businesses, even in publicly traded companies, because they need to juice short-term returns, leaving early-stage financing in trouble.Question: What percentage of your investments targets a local or regional market as opposed to a global market?Skip to 11:00 in MP3Summary: Morpheus does local plays in India. It had tried global plays from India, but unless management and marketing were in the US, you missed that critical local nuance.Question: If costs are lower in India than in the US, how is this reflected in the amount of funding required?Skip to 14:48 in MP3Summary: Funding is not lower and may even be higher because people won’t work for equity as they do in the Valley.Question: What market segments excite you today?Skip to 19:30 in MP3Summary: Health care for the mass market in India.Interesting Portfolio CompaniesVericar does used-car certification and appraisal, catering to the used-car market in India, which is at a million units every year.Robots Alive is the second company in India to have manufactured a robotics arm from the ground up.
