Sick note responsibility may pass on to OH professionals

first_img Previous Article Next Article Comments are closed. GPswill give up the right to issue sick notes to workers by April 2006Withinthree years, OH professionals may take over the issuing of sick notes, underradical plans being drawn up by the Government and the medical profession.GPswill give up the right to issue sick notes to workers by 1 April 2006, as partof a new contract between negotiated by the British Medical Association (BMA)and the Department of Health (DoH) designed to reduce the workload of familydoctors.Sicknotes would instead be issued by OH professionals, either company doctors ornurses, according to Dr Simon Fradd, joint deputy chairman of the BMA’s GPs’committee.”Itwill be occupational health, but not just nurses. If it happens to be anurse-run system, then it will be nurse delivered,” he said.Atleast six pilot schemes are due to be set up by the autumn, with Coca-Cola’splant in Macclesfield one of the first expected to join. Negotiations are alsotaking place with a number of motor manufacturers and an NHS Plus site.Althoughopposition to the contract is growing among GPs, and it is not certain it willgo ahead, the plan to change illness certification will go ahead irrespectiveof the outcome, insisted Dr Fradd.Talksare due to begin with the CBI, the TUC and other unions on how the pilots willwork in practice, as well as continuing fine-tuning discussions with the DoH.Themain outstanding issues surrounded capacity – how the OH profession will copewith this new demand – and how it will work for smaller employers that do nothave OH schemes, he suggested. It is expected smaller firms would be allowed tobuy in illness certification services through specialist doctors or an existingOH scheme.Firmsare increasingly worried about the amount of time employees take off sick, despite the number of days lost to sickness falling to their lowest level for15 years.Undercurrent law, employees do not need a sick note until they have been off workfor seven days, although many firms insist on a note within this period. Tony Winner Kelli O’Hara on Why Leaving The King and I Feels ‘Strange and Heartbreaking’

first_img The King and I Related Shows Kelli O’Hara(Photos: Bruce Glikas, Paul Kolnik, Theo Wargo/Getty Images) In the corporate world, employees leaving a job are often asked to sit through an exit interview with HR about their time at the company. That concept doesn’t exist for Broadway performers, but we love checking in with stars as they finish up a successful run. Kelli O’Hara, who was nominated five previous times over a decade, won her first Tony Award for playing Anna Leonowens in The King and I. The actress, who was named the 2015 Broadway.com Star of the Year, will take her final bow in the Tony-winning revival on April 17. We asked the lovable star to participate in Broadway.com’s Exit Interview and tell us all about what she learned, loved and will miss about her time in the classic musical. How did you feel when you first got this job?Excited and a little apprehensive. I didn’t know this show/role that well and honestly thought it would be easier than it has been. But the challenges have ultimately been the most fulfilling part. How do you feel now that you’re leaving?I feel proud of this show, the family we have created at LCT and very grateful that roles like Anna exist, and especially that I was asked to play her. What are three words you would use to describe your experience? Cathartic, personal, educational. What was the easiest thing about this job? Loving the children. What was the hardest thing? Missing my own. What was the highlight of your time at this job? My highlight of any project is always the rehearsal period when the work is really done. I always miss it when it’s over. What skills are required for future job applicants? Ha! I never think of our jobs like that. They aren’t technical or cookie-cutter. They are emotional and best served by being special to the individual playing them. And my Anna will be different from any other Anna. I guess I would ask, out of respect for my company who will still be there, that the actress has a good moral core, a strong investment in a close company of actors and a warm heart. And I know we have hit the jackpot with Marin Mazzie. What advice would you give to future employees in your job position? Be an observant and quiet leader. Support when it is needed but concentrate on the show itself, and in some way, a healthy, strong show will make for a healthy, loyal company. How do you think you’ve grown?Anyone who plays Anna will grow, I think. Her strength, her fearlessness and her dedication to something good and just have definitely affected me. She has made me feel stronger and more confident. Why are you leaving? I miss my own children, and I want more time with them, but I also want to move on creatively. I always itch to do new things professionally. I always have. What will you miss the most? I will miss my cast more than I can put down in words. They are beautiful, soulful, dedicated artists, and I love them so much. We built this together, and leaving them feels strange and heartbreaking. But I have been around this business long enough to know that I will be with them again and that perhaps my leaving will create a change for them that is creative and healthy and new.center_img View Comments Show Closed This production ended its run on June 26, 2016last_img read more

Bibby carries out decom project in Gulf of Mexico for Shell

first_imgBibby Offshore’s Houston-based division, Bibby Subsea, has completed a contract with Shell Pipeline, a subsidiary of Shell Oil US.Bibby said on Monday that, through an alliance with US diving company Aqueos Corporation, it completed a subsea decommissioning project in the Gulf of Mexico utilizing its diving support vessel Bibby Sapphire. The company added that the Bibby Sapphire was equipped with an SMD Quasar work class ROV to disconnect a previously decommissioned eight-inch oil export pipeline from a hot tap tee installed on the Amberjack Pipeline.During the 16-day campaign, Bibby also removed the connecting subsea tie-in assembly, 353ft below sea level.Fraser Moonie, Bibby Subsea president and managing director, said: “Securing this contract was a direct result of our strategic alliance with Aqueos, and we are delighted to have been selected to execute this project; it is an example of the commitment and capability that the teams possess, and builds on completed work from earlier this year.“It reinforces Bibby Offshore’s successful and long-standing track record with the leading international oil company, in a highly competitive marketplace.”last_img read more

Joshua: I’ll be brutal against Ruiz Jr

first_imgRelatedPosts Joshua: Why I visited Nigeria as non-champion Joshua resumes training for Pulev WBA Champion Charr to hold Ruiz Jr talks Anthony Joshua was in bullish mood at the press conference ahead of his hotly anticipated rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr.The pair are set to fight on Saturday night in Saudi Arabia as the Brit aims to reclaim the IBF, WBA and WBO world titles that he lost to the Mexican fighter on June 1 at Madison Square Garden. The 30-year-old said: “I am punching like a horse kicking backwards right now.“I’m punching loose and heavy – rhythm and flow. Before I was trying to bench-press a house. I used my body to get where I needed but then I started realising the sweet science of the sport. The Watford man was also keen to stress that he will be coming into the fight significantly lighter than in previous bouts.“I may be less than 17 stone,” he told BBC Sport.Joshua weighed in at 17st 9lbs in the last fight, but his decision to reduce his weight appears part of a change in training to make up for the first professional defeat of his career. The last time he fought at under 18st was five years ago; against Denis Bakhtov in his ninth pro fight.Boxing analyst Steve Bunce said the news of Joshua’s weight was surprising.“I think it’s startling,” said Bunce. “Heavyweights like Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson that didn’t carry flesh, they don’t lose three pounds between fights, they normally increase slightly. They don’t drop weight.“He’s suggesting he’ll drop 9lbs – nearly a stone lighter than the Klitschko fight.“He’s moved away from strength and conditioning to pure boxing training.”Tags: Andy Ruiz JrAnthony oshualast_img read more

England Confirm Wales Friendly for October 8

first_imgEngland will face neighbours Wales in an international friendly at Wembley on Thursday 8 October for what will be the Three Lions’ first home game of 2020.The game will form part of October’s triple header international break and will be played behind closed doors in keeping with current government guidelines on the coronavirus crisis. Both the October and November international breaks later this year will feature three games instead of the usual two in order to make up for cancellations and postponements of summer matches. By the time England face Wales in three months’ time, Gareth Southgate’s side won’t have played a game at Wembley for nearly a year as a direct result of the pandemic. March friendlies against Italy and Denmark were both cancelled, while Euro 2020 has been pushed back to next year.England’s last home game was the 7-0 annihilation of Montenegro in November 2019.England will actually be back in action a month sooner than the Wales friendly when the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League campaign kicks off in September.Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and co. will open with a game in Iceland on 5 September to start League A Group 2. That is quickly followed by a visit to Denmark three days later on 8 September, with England’s first match in October the friendly against Wales.Later in the October international break, England will host Belgium and Denmark at Wembley.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Volunteers Create Quilts for Local Vietnam War Veterans

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterShare to MoreAddThis Honoring veterans in the Northeast Michigan area who fought in the Vietnam War, one family decided to come up with a unique way to give back. It started when the White’s purchased shirts for the annual ‘Wings over Alpena’ honoring war veterans. Not knowing what to do with the leftover shirts, the White’s solution was to reach out to a group of quilters at the Alpena Senior Citizens Center to take on the job of making quilts for those who served.“Being a veteran myself, and being in the military, it’s great because these vets didn’t have a great welcome home when they came back from their war, it means a lot,” Andy White said.If you ever tried quilting you know it’s a no joke. Taking on the job with no questions asked, 14 beautiful quilts were made in the process.“If there’s anything that I can do it’s this, and it’s very rewarding,” Volunteer, Jennie Gilman said.White said he’s proud of the quilts that were made stitch by stitch over the 8–month period.“They did an excellent job. I couldn’t have done this. I don’t have the patience for one but they turned out great and just the imagination these ladies had with the ideas that we had and the collaboration they did a great job,” White added. Thanks to the White’s, one volunteer will be able to give a quilt back to her own loved one.“He wouldn’t talk much about Vietnam, so when I showed him the quilt he talked about how beautiful it was and so I was just very touched by that. I’m very happy, and it was very generous of them to give one to my brother,” Volunteer, Esther Donald-Briggs said. Now that the quilts are completed, the White’s will be reaching out to the Veterans Affairs Office, Friends Together in Alpena and others to find Vietnam veterans that made need a little warmth in their life.So the next time you think about tossing out shirts, maybe saving them for a quilt is the way to go. AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterShare to MoreAddThisContinue ReadingPrevious Structure Fire Put Out Quickly With No InjuriesNext Field Trip Friday: A Trip Back In Time (Pt1)last_img read more

New Google App Approved for iPhones

first_imgWe’ve just heard from our friends at Google that their mobile app is now available in the App Store for iPhone users everywhere. In the new version of Google Mobile, everyone’s favorite search company has redesigned their results display to show more results at one time. Also, users will be able to open web pages from search results from inside the app. Other new features are pretty impressive, too.Users can now customize the application by any color they choose. Users with speedy iPhone models can also choose to turn on a moving waveform for voice-activated searches. These mods are available under a “Bells and Whistles” setting for fancy gizmodgery. And speaking of searching by voice, Google has worked out a special sort of magic for sussing out not only the language but also the accent of the speaker. “For example,” writes software engineer Alastair Tse, “if you’re Australian but live in London, you can improve the recognition accuracy by selecting Australian in the Voice Search settings.”Google has also added such languages as Mandarin and Japanese to its list of supported languages. Offering Green Construction Products in a Big-Box Setting

first_imgBack in mid-March, it looked as if New Home Inc. was only a month away from opening its first store, a showroom featuring green building products and services that was planned for a 12,000-sq.-ft. space in San Rafael, California, about 30 miles north of San Francisco. The plan is still in place, but the actual opening is taking longer than originally expected (see this Fine Homebuilding blog posted March 16). As New Home CEO Rich Rifkin explained to the Oakland Tribune for a story published this week, a shortage of investment capital has slowed the rollout of what he says will be a chain of big-box stores that not only will sell green construction products and services but compete with Home Depot and Lowe’s on price.“We need money to get through our first stage of expansion,” Rifkin, who has put $1.4 million of own money into the business, told the paper. “You hear about these big-name people who say they are green and behind being green. But the reality is a lot of people haven’t put their money where their mouth is.”While the New Home business strategy includes online sales, showroom launches are the current priority. The Tribune notes that the company has plans for stores in 10 Bay Area locations, each of which is expected to offer more than 200,000 environmentally friendly products and cater to homeowners as well as contractors and developers. Customers also will be able to obtain advice from professionals, join the store’s referral network, and access its educational library about green building materials. About 100,000 documents and videos will be available, along with a blogger service.Key to its mission, the company says, is that New Home guarantees the eco-friendly provenance and sustainability of products sold in its stores, and makes it easy for customers to research options for everything from small home improvements to major projects.last_img read more
