first_imgWest Florida Blanks Tampa in Regional Showdown Share Aug. 31, 2007 Box Score  TAMPA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men’s soccer (2-1-0) team continued their offensive onslaught and the defense collected their first shutout of the season, as the Argonauts blanked Tampa University (1-1-0) with an impressive 4-0 victory Friday night on the Spartans home field.The Argonauts struck first at the 7:34 mark of the game when Keith Savage (Sr. / Gulf Breeze, Fla.) sent a cross into the box for Jimmy McHenry (Sr./ Tallahassee, Fla.) who was able to control the ball and beat the keeper. For Savage it was his ninth point of the season, four goals and an assist.15 minutes later, the Argonauts took a 2-0 lead on an own goal off the head of a Tampa defender. Mason Hupp (Jr. / Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) sent a long ball into the box and a miss communication between the Spartans goalkeeper and the his defender led to the second goal.McHenry picked up his second goal of the game and season off a pass over the head of the Spartan defense from Nick Mroczkowski (Sr. / Deltona, Fla.). The perfectly played ball left McHenry with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, which he was able to finish giving West Florida a 3-0 lead.The Argonauts finished the first half with another goal in the 32nd minute of the game. Once again it was McHenry who lead the West Florida charge as he rifled a shot from beyond the 18-yard box. His shot ricochet of the top cross bar but Rafael Segal (Jr. / Rishon Lezion, Isreal) was there to clean up the garbage using his head to give the Argonauts a 4-0 half time lead.The Spartans responded in the second half playing a more physical game and the Spartan offense out shot the Argonauts 7-5 in the second half. However, the Argonauts defense anchored by Okang Nkosi (Sr. / Port of Spain, Trinidad), Matt Williams (Jr. / Pensacola, Fla.), Nolan Intermoia (Jr. / Pensacola, Fla.), and Hupp stood strong in the back.For West Florida, who competes in the NCAA Division II South Region along with Tampa, it is an important win towards the post season tournament, which the Argonauts were able to host all last season due to their success during the regular season.Up next for West Florida is another Sunshine State Conference and regional opponent Saint Leo University on Sunday after noon at the Lions home field.
