The PennApps Hackathon was held this weekend at the University of Pennsylvania. The hackathon ran from 6pm Friday evening until this afternoon, with 30 some-odd teams rapidly building their apps. The hackathon was geared towards mobile app development, and participants were given a choice as to which platform they could opt to work on.Interestingly, even though iPhones were the most popular devices in terms of students’ ownership, with 25% saying that’s what they carry, it was not the most popular platform to develop on – not by a long shot.16% said they preferred Android. Just 2% chose iPhone, less than the 3% who indicated “mobile Web” was their preference. The students said they preferred Android for a variety of reasons, including their familiarity with Java. They also indicated they preferred Android as it was flexible, straightforward, and open source. This makes the transition to Sparrow easy, whether you’re a “hardcore” Gmail user or not. The interface is very intuitive. Arrow down, for example, to get to the next message. Arrow right to open the far right pane, and arrow left to close it again.Sparrow’s “quick reply” feature is great, and keeps with the app’s minimalist interface. When you hit the reply button in message views, you’ll get a small text box, ideal for typing quick replies to simple questions. But you can also pull up more options with the reply button’s dropdown menu, including the standard reply, repl all, forward and delete options. The app also supports Growl notifications, allows you to drag-and-drop images directly into messages, and displays your messages in threads. The one feature that I noticed that’s missing is “mark all items as read,” but I’m not sure you’re supposed to publicly disclose that you do such things to email. And while we’re on the subject of disclosure, I’ll admit that I was pretty skeptical initially that a desktop client could woo me away from the web. But having taken Sparrow for a spin, I’m impressed. And now, I’m a user.Currently, Sparrow only works with Gmail. You can add multiple accounts – great for those who have personal Gmail accounts but also use Google Apps. As Sparrow uses IMAP, support for other email services will is in the works, with Version 1.1 out soon. Tags:#biz#Reviews 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout audrey watters We’ve been hearing good things about Sparrow, an OS X IMAP e-mail client, since its beta release last fall. The app hit the new Mac App Store earlier this week, quickly shooting up to the top paid app spot. That speaks volumes about Sparrow as the app costs $9.99 while the web-based access to Gmail, the only email currently supported by the app, is of course free. For those using Gmail who’ve been looking for a clean and simple native Mac client, then Sparrow might be just the thing for you. Honestly, I’d say that even for those who haven’t been looking for a desktop client. The common refrain you’ll hear about Sparrow is that it’s like Twitter for email. Indeed, the interface is very reminiscent of Tweetie for Mac. There are three columns: the left column contains your inbox, starred, sent, drafts and trash. The center column contains a short preview of messages. And the right column, which is collapsible, contains the full email message.
LinkedIn Endorsements may be the fastest-growing new product launch in the history of LinkedIn, but it is also arguably the most pointless. Launched as a lightweight way to recommend colleagues so as to boost their resumes, LinkedIn Endorsements have become useless noise on an otherwise useful service.Yet LinkedIn shows no signs of abandoning Endorsements. In fact, on a recent earnings call, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner trumpeted the new product hitting 1 billion Endorsements in just under five months. He called out how the service has done a “nice job … of creating the right kind of viral loops,” bringing people back to the site that otherwise might use LinkedIn as a site to use when actively looking for a job every few years. With this and LinkedIn’s Influencers product, which is turning LinkedIn into a destination site for constantly updated content, the company appears to be succeeding in generating ongoing interest in using the site, and not merely when people need to polish their resumes for a job search.LinkedIn Signal, Meet Endorsements NoiseThe problem with Endorsements, however, is that they generate mindless clicks with no real value to the person endorsing someone else, or the person receiving the endorsement. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… LinkedIn uses sophisticated data analysis to comb through one’s profile and tease out skills that can be endorsed by others, with a team of data scientists constantly improving its algorithms. However, as can be seen in my example above, the skills LinkedIn highlights are often not very relevant to the person being recommended. Worse, it’s so easy to endorse someone that it’s very easy to end up with a pile of Endorsements that in isolation and in aggregate mean absolutely nothing. As a hiring manager, I’m going to give exactly ZERO weight to this stockpile of “endorsements,” because they effectively amount to a Facebook “Like.” They’re far too easily given, and don’t really tell me what the person being endorsed has done to merit the Endorsement.Endorsements Seen As ShallowSo while LinkedIn Endorsements product manager Peter Rusev happily declares Endorsements the greatest thing since sliced bread, more often I’m hearing comments like these:andIt’s understandable that LinkedIn would seek ways to boost return visits to its website. But as these and many other comments suggest, Endorsements may well be akin to Macbeth’s “life … told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Endorsements create a heck of a lot of noise, and precious little signal. Perhaps that’s one reason that the company didn’t mention Endorsements at all on its most recent earnings call in May 2013.A More Positive Viral Loop For LinkedInIf LinkedIn wants to find more ways to bring people back to the site, I suggest it send out more “You have 20 voyeurs this week” emails. Given how vain we are, this strikes me as a great way to get people visiting the site to see who is checking them out. And beyond mere vanity, it’s also a great way to determine what competitors and prospective customers are thinking about.Given that LinkedIn is already willing to tell me who has been looking at my profile, why not tighten the service to highlight when competitors view my profile? Or for a sales rep, let them list out a group of companies in which they’re interested and generate reports on the companies (or skills/technologies) they’re actively viewing? These may be a bit more invasive, but they also offer real value. Unlike Endorsements, which are so shallow that they’ve become résumé spam. The Congress has won 73 of the 81 seats in the civic polls in Nanded, the home turf of their State party chief Ashok Chavan, as per the final results declared early on Friday. Denting the BJP’s bid to wrest power, the Congress was successful in limiting the saffron party’s tally to six in the elections to the Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation (NWMC). The results of four seats were kept pending on Thursday due to technical reasons and were declared on Friday, an official of the State Election Commission said. Mr. Chavan yesterday attributed the party’s win to non-tampering of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) and claimed that the BJP’s “return journey” has started. As per the final tally of the total 81 seats, the Congress won 73, followed by the BJP which bagged six seats. The Shiv Sena just about managed to open its account with one seat. An independent candidate also won a seat.“The results have proven that the return journey of the BJP has started from Maharashtra. Our ground work in Nanded ensured that there was no tampering of EVMs, which led to our victory,” Mr. Chavan yesterday told reporters here after taking part in the victory celebrations outside the Mumbai Congress office.“There is severe discontent among the people due to high fuel prices, farmers’ suicides and troubles caused to cultivators due to faulty loan waiver system. People have understood the hollow claims made by the Chief Minister (Devendra Fadnavis),” Mr. Chavan said. Maharashtra’s labour minister Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar, who was in-charge of the BJP’s poll machinery in Nanded, claimed that the party’s vote share rose from 3% in 2012 to 19% this time around. However, BJP’s new ally and Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksha (MSP) leader Narayan Rane advised the BJP leadership to do an introspection on why it fared so bad despite the Chief Minister holding many election rallies in the run-up to the Nanded civic polls. He, however, dismissed the argument that the Nanded civic poll results would have an impact on the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The Nanded civic body has been ruled by the Congress, since it came into existence two decades ago. The party-wise strength in NWMC prior to this election was: Congress—41, Shiv Sena—14, AIMIM—11, NCP —10, independents—three and BJP—two. Notably, the BJP had won 12 of the 16 civic bodies in Maharashtra, for which polls were held this year, expanding its footprint in the state’s urban pockets. It had made inroads into the traditional Congress strongholds and also those of partner Shiv Sena.
Seeking large participation of people in the upcoming panchayat polls, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday said it would be followed by elections to the urban local bodies (ULB) to fully empower these basic democratic institutions. The State government has announced holding of the panchayat polls from mid-February. Panchayat elections were last held in the State in 2011, while polls to urban local bodies were held in 2005.“My government is committed to empowerment of grassroot level institutions and the proposed elections to the panchayats and ULBs is a major step in that direction,” Mufti said.Seeking large participation of people in the panchayat elections, she said it would be followed by elections to the urban local bodies.“Elections to panchayats and ULBs will empower these institutions to not only have the democratic powers but the financial resources as well to undertake developmental activities at the grass-root levels.‘Vital role’“These democratic institutions play a vital role in taking forward the all-round developmental agenda of the government for every section of the population,” the CM said, while addressing various delegations here. The Chief Minister said the State’s election authority would formally set the process for holding panchayat polls into motion after the Rural Development Department issues the requisite notification in accordance with the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act.She said her government had made a commitment on the floor of the House in June 2016 that the elections to the rural and urban local bodies would be held at the earliest to ensure full empowerment of these institutions.New district chiefsAhead of the polls, Ms. Mufti nominated Shafeeq ur Rehman as district president for Reasi, Faqir Chand Baghat for Jammu Rural, Harmesh Salatia for Samba, Surinder Singh for Kathua and Irshad Kar for Baramulla.

The 19th Commonwealth Games was jointly declared open by Prince Charles and President of India Pratibha Patil on Sunday in a diplomatic compromise that was worked out much before the inauguration.Officially the Queen, the ceremonial head of the Commonwealth, declares the Games open. But the monarch’s decision not to attend the ceremony for the first time in 44 years led to a diplomatic arrangement between the British officials and the Indian authorities.Under the compromise it was decided that both Charles and President Patil would jointly declare the Games open.In a spectacular opening ceremony, after the Queen’s baton was handed over by Beijing Olympic bronze medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar to Charles, the Prince of Wales read out the Queen’s message but it was President Patil who had the last word, saying, “Let the Games begin”.
It’s said only films and cricket unite India. In terms of pan-Indian recognition and affection, even Bollywood stands second to the country’s national obsession, cricket. Cricket cuts through barriers of region and language that this cultural behemoth cannot scale. It is why in a recent survey Sachin Tendulkar scored over Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan both on visibility and a “quality” index that ranked celebrities for reflecting virtues like trustworthiness and honesty. India is probably the only country where cricket is played on every street corner. The popularity of the sport in India has translated into the fact that the business of international cricket is dependent on Indian cricket. Some estimates reckon Indian cricket economy to be worth Rs 1,000 crore a year, driving between 60 and 70 per cent of the world’s cricket business. Cricket’s boom in the 1990s was closely linked to commerce. It is now a child of satellite television and free market, not only a popular and profitable sport but a brand; a financial force that supports an entire industry made up of players, officials, sponsors, television executives, event promoters, agents and finally the consumer, who cannot get enough of this product. Today, the Indians have lost their team sponsor due to a controversial contract devised to protect the sponsors of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC had to effect a compromise and amend its terms because the Indians, the big drawcard for TV audiences and advertisers, dug in their heels for two months and refused to sign the contract. Our cover story studies the turmoil and churning in the financial phenomenon that is Indian cricket. It is a multi-layered subject but one that is hardly studied in any depth. With the stakes getting higher and the World Cup around the corner, more tumult and intrigues off the field lie ahead. In a sign of the times, the story on cricket was put together by a team of four who among them cover politics, the media, business and sport. After all, today Indian cricket is not just a game.
