LOS ANGELES >> There aren’t a shortage of things to digest after a 45-point loss, preseason or not, but the hardest thing for Doc Rivers and the Clippers to swallow might be his team’s lack of competitiveness in their preseason opener Tuesday at Golden State.Rivers voiced his displeasure with that aspect during and after his team’s loss to Golden State, and a day later, before his team hosted Toronto, that hadn’t really changed. He still wasn’t exactly sure how to answer questions about what an acceptable level of competitiveness is in the preseason.“It’s tough because you want your whole team to be competitive. But what if one of your key guys is not that night? Does that affect your whole team? It does,” Rivers said. “You go game by game. You know it when you see it. I don’t know, that’s up for everybody else’s eyes to figure out … There are certain things I think you should always be competitive if you’re on the floor in things that you do.” “No, we’ve got to compete. And, that’s how you build winning habits.”Lend a handBefore wrapping his pregame media session, Rivers asked the press to help one of their own.Longtime Associated Press writer Joe Resnick is suffering from colorectal cancer, and with mounting medical costs, Rivers urged the press to contribute.Donations can be made via Resnick’s GoFundMe page.Griffin shines in victoryIf this is the Blake Griffin the Clippers get this season, they’ll take it.Griffin shot 10 for 13 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers in their 104-98 win over the Raptors on Wednesday night at Staples Center.Griffin, who missed more than half of last season with quad and hand injuries, looked like an improved version of his former self, hitting from deep to go along with eight rebounds and five assists in 26 solid minutes. The Clippers led by as many as 20 before they emptied their bench, but Toronto’s deep reserves put together a 19-0 run to take a brief fourth-quarter lead. However, Raymond Felton’s last-minute driving basket sealed the win. The Clippers play again Monday against the Utah Jazz at Staples Center.NotesJ.J. Redick was a healthy scratch Wednesday night, getting a scheduled day off. …The Clippers renovated their locker rooms this summer, expanding their Staples Center by adding space to the training rooms, coaches’ offices and more. … With Redick out, the Clippers started Raymond Felton and Austin Rivers alongside Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. Wednesday against Toronto, the Clippers were certainly more competitive, especially early, playing with a better energy and scoring and defending with exponentially more precision. And, in the preseason, that just happens sometimes.“They are not robots,” Rivers said. “And so, they’re going to have nights where they blow someone out. You don’t coach differently that next game. There are going to be nights where you get your butt kicked.”Toronto coach Dwane Casey said he feels like his team can’t afford to have competitive lulls whether they come in the preseason or not.“Every time we walk into practice, all this bull crap ‘I’m saving myself for the regular season,’ for what?” Casey said. “For a young team, we’re trying to grow and get to where the Clippers are. We have to take every opportunity to create winning habits. Whether it’s in drills, in scrimmages or exhibition games, we’ve got to create those habits. We’re not in a place where we can come out (like), ‘This is just exhibition; we can go through the motions.’ Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error

Wellington had just four hits in the game to Derby’s 10, yet was able to put it together when it counted most.Heat’s Grant Buchanon of Colby College mustered his way onto first to lead off the inning with an infield grounder and beating the throw to first. He then rounded second and third on sacrifices. Then with two outs, he came home on another infield blooper. His base running was classic small ball Heat baseball.“If we can ever get our pitching and hitting going at the same time, we might be dangerous,†said Rick Twyman, Wellington head baseball coach/owner. “Last night (Wednesday’s 6-5 win over Derby) we hit the ball well and won a close one. But our pitching was suspect. Tonight it was just the opposite.â€But really who is complaining? The Heat are 11-0 and perched on top of the Jayhawk League with a 5-0 record, ahead of the Hays Larks, who are 6-1.Life is good for Heat fans as children come to get autographs from Wellington Heat.Speaking of which, Wellington embarks on a trip to Hays this weekend for a three-game series. The Heat swept them last year in Hays after the Larks did the same to the Heat at Sellers Park.“We are hoping to get two out of three,†Twyman said. “It’s always a tough place to play out there.â€The 11-0 record looks good on the scorebook but Twyman isn’t impressed.“I had a year where we went 64-4,†Twyman said. “So we have a long ways to go before we break any milestones.“Everyone gets caught up with this undefeated record. But no one is going undefeated in the Jayhawk League. It just isn’t going to happen. Like tonight. We probably shouldn’t have won that game but we did.â€Things really can’t be more peachy for the Heat at the moment. They are winning and the crowds are good. Sellers Park stands were packed Thursday night. The Major League Baseball Draft came and went and Wellington lost one player to the pros: Brad Wieck – a player who wasn’t likely of ever donning a Heat uniform anyway.“Our lineup is young,†Twyman said. “We just have to get better. There’s still a lot of baseball to be played.”The win came on Slyder’s birthday. Slyder is the Golden Retriever mascot. The team sang to him Happy Birthday and Slyder was provided a treat at the pitching mound after the game was over.(Courtesy photo of the Wellington Heat).•••••Jayhawk Standings as of June 13, 2014:1.
